2022 Guests of Honor
This year's local GOH is Oklahoma-based artist SBGothik!
"For as long as I can remember, I have always had a passion for art. I began to develop my skills drawing animals from a very young age and later on put a lot of effort into understanding my 2-dimensional drawings as 3-dimensional objects.
My kneaded eraser was, perhaps, my first sculpting clay and from there I moved on to Sculpie. In 2014, I became curious about cosplay and the type of people who would dress up in elaborate costumes.
Around this time I discovered Clockwork Creatures, Monoyasha, CanineHybrid and others, and my love for the video game Skyrim inspired me to make my own character, a khajiit named S'Rava (a cat-like race in the game universe), as a cosplay. I fell in love with the craft immediately and soon tried my hand at a Sora lion cosplay from the game Kingdom Hearts 2.
Ironically, my interest in the Oddities community helped to hone my skills in realistic costume work in mimicing life-like fur textures, jaws, and head shapes. Having dabbled in both realistic and toony styles, I realised that my background, passion and prior character design and sculpting experience had better prepared me to make realistic suits. When my vanilla day job became hazardous to my physical and mental health, I took those first tentative steps into doing costume work full time. It's been a wild ride so far, and a decision I don't regret."
Our National GOH is the smartest pine marten on the internet, Chise!
"I am a Scientist in Vaccine Research and Development and have been in the Biology field for about 10 years now.
My research focuses on uncovering mechanisms of viral pathogenesis and host immunity. My lab’s focus is to better understand basic aspects of viral pathogenesis and apply that knowledge toward development of safer and more effective vaccines. Outside of the pandemic, my research efforts have been dedicated to studying MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV, Zika, Ebola, DENV, HIV, RSV, Influenza, and other emerging pathogens.
Currently, my research efforts have been dedicated to SARS-CoV-2, as I helped develop and provide research for Moderna’s vaccine that was co-developed with NIAID.
When I am not at work or conducting research, I utilize my fursonas/fursuits and my platform as an activist for BIPOC as well as LGBTQIA+ individuals in the fandom, and to provide science communication on Twitter to help aid people’s understanding of COVID-19 and the vaccines."
